The proposal is to «do something different»: in January, February and March, wineries in the municipality of Silves will host jazz concerts that can be enjoyed while drinking a wine produced there. The idea for this «Jazz in the Cellars», which is part of 365 Algarve program, started from the Silvense Chamber and wants, in addition to animating the wineries and promoting local wines, «to create a cultural dynamism».

In statements to the Sul Informação, Sandra Moreira, coordinator of the communication office of the Silves Chamber, explained that, «when 365 Algarve appeared, the municipalities were challenged to make different proposals and this was an idea that we already had».

Thus, «given the intimate atmosphere» of a winery, jazz was the type of music chosen. “We hope to reach different generations and nationalities. We have many foreign residents in the municipality, who are people with a specific appetite for this type of proposal», considered Sandra Moreira.

One of the goals was to have «some Algarve musicians», which gives «guarantees that we will attract audiences not only from the county, but from other places that know and accompany the musicians».

Os Gobi Jazz Dogs are the first group of guests on the program «Jazz nas Adegas», which starts on January 14th, at 21 pm, with a first event, at Thursday João Clara, in Alcantarilha. This is one of the brands that integrates «Wines from Silves».

The quartet of musicians will carry a «sound heritage, in which jazz, funk or bossa-nova will be present», according to the local authority. There will also be improvisations and solos by Pedro Gil, on guitar, Ricardo Coelho, on piano, Paulo Strak, on double bass, and Vasco Fialho, on drums.

A week later, on January 21st, it will be the Quinta da Vineyard, in Sítio da Vala, whose wine produced is called «Cabrita», receiving jazz in its cellars with «Prima Matéria».

From 21 pm, Luís Domingos Miguel (Tenor and Alto saxophone), David Fournier (Guitar), Hugo Santos (Bass) and Filipe Sequeira (Drums) will present a repertoire that intends to be «contemplative, changeable, disconcerting and energetic, composed essentially by originals, combining jazz tradition with contemporaneity».

On the 11th of February, also at 21 pm, the proposal is to taste a wine from Quinta do Lagar, which has names like «!mprevisto» or «Euphoria» to the sound of Biel Ballester Trio. This ensemble intends not only to maintain the jazz style tradition, but also to incorporate «original compositions of the various edited works».

Composed by Biel Ballester, on solo guitar, Leo Hipaucha, on rhythm guitar, and Oriol Gonzalez, on double bass, this group gained «great projection during their participation in the soundtrack of the film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”», by Woody Allen ( a great jazz lover and himself a musician), tells Câmara de Silves.

The Algarve Sara Badalo – with her project «What About Sara» – will be the animator at Quinta do Barradas, in Sítio da Venda Nova, on the 18th of February. The wine tasting at Quinta do Barradas will accompany Sara Badalo, who is described as being «one of the most recent voices to emerge in the panorama of Jazz in Portugal».

In this project, the Algarve mixes jazz and blues repertoire “in a unique way”. The group to act will have Marcos Badalo, on guitar and bass, and Paulo Machado, on keyboards, accordion, bass, and vocals.

The penultimate performance of «Jazz nas Adegas» will take place on March 10, at French Thursday, in Odelouca, at 21 pm. The wine: Quinta do Francês. In the song: Hugo Antunes Standards Trio, «with the intention of exploring the North American jazz songbook». The group is composed by Gonçalo Neto, on guitar, Hugo Antunes, on double bass, and Luís Candeias, on drums.

Lastly, Beatriz Cruz, on March 17th, will close at fifth rose, this «Jazz in the Cellars», where the wine will be Jaap. Accompanying her will be Tiago Pinto, on guitar, João Ruano, on bass, Gonçalo Machado, on drums, and Vasco Vilhena, on piano.

Admission to the concerts of «Jazz nas Adegas» costs 7,5 euros, including the right to a tasting and a concert.
