The show “Villa-Lobos in Movement”, which is a reinterpretation, for classical guitar, of the pieces by this Brazilian composer, also performed through dance, will animate TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão, on February 4th, from 16:00 pm, the Centro Cultural de Lagos, on the 18th, at 21:30 pm, and the Municipal Library of Olhão, on March 4, from 18:00 pm.

This recital “evolves from the recognition of European influences brought to Brazil by the Portuguese colonization during the reign of D. João VI”, explains the organization. From these, Heitor Villa-Lobos created a «genuinely Brazilian work, which has influenced several generations of composers».

The show, directed by Tela Leão, thus takes the audience on a journey through the evolution of Brazil's cultural identity.

Villa-Lobos' pieces for classical guitar are «brilliantly interpreted by Josué Nunes, to accompany the fluent movements of Simone Marçal, whose expressive face leads us through the ever-changing moods and various narrative languages of the program», in the opinion of Len Graham, critic and cultural animator of “Qube Arts Oswestry”, UK.

The piece opens with music and dance that evoke Rio de Janeiro, between the mountains and the sea. Then there is a tribute to Bach, where Villa-Lobos echoes the sonatas for solo violin, «and reflects in a humorous way on the first European influences on Brazilian culture».

The show uses only one costume, but some props, such as a hat, teacups, sunglasses or a wig. “Everything working together for a precise and precious dramatic effect”, considers the organization.

“Villa-Lobos in motion” is an initiative that is part of the program 365 Algarve e who already had a first performance in Tavira.
