The Mediterranean Diet Fair takes place from 7 to 10 September next year, announced the Câmara de Tavira. This event will close the presidency of Portugal, and of Tavira, of the annual program of the 7 representative States and Communities of the Mediterranean Diet as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

An international conference is also planned in May, in partnership with the University of Algarve, on the preservation and dissemination of good practices of the Mediterranean Diet.

Next Sunday, December 4, marks the 3rd anniversary of the inscription of the Mediterranean Diet as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, in an application that included Tavira.

The Mediterranean Diet represents an ancient lifestyle, the daiat from Ancient Greece, marked by the trilogy and rituals of sacred foods, bread, oil and wine, by conviviality and cyclical festivities, by a healthy eating model based on local, fresh and seasonal products, recognized by the World Health Organization – WHO as a food standard of excellence.

«The Mediterranean Diet is extremely current and socially useful, being one of the necessary responses to face the planet's global problems: the diseases of civilization caused by behavioral causes, the destruction of ecosystems and biological and cultural diversity», says Câmara de Tavira .

Mediterranean Diet Fair_44Tavira, as a representative community of Portugal, considered the moment of registration as «prestigious, cultural and scientific recognition for the work carried out» but above all the beginning of a new, more demanding stage in preservation through the transmission of the element to current and future generations, with consequences for the populations, the economy of the region and the country.

This year, there were multiple actions carried out and supported by the Community of Tavira, «highlighting the institutional presence in the National Monitoring Group, communications in various international and national conferences or the shared organization of the IV Mediterranean Diet Fair, at the beginning of September », considers the Tavirense autarchy

There were also educational sessions on healthy eating and a long-term educational exhibition on the subject continued at the Palácio da Galeria/Museu Municipal de Tavira, accompanied by the program «Mediterranean Diet All Year», with workshops and tours of interpretation. The annual appreciation of sea and mountain gastronomy was presented in the format of festivals.

In response to external requests, the traveling exhibition “Mediterranean Diet – Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” was conceived and carried out, free of charge to Municipalities and entities that request it. This exhibition was presented in Tavira, Portugal Agro, Lisbon, on the Gambelas campus of the University of Algarve (Faro), now at the headquarters of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
