The celebration of the commitment of the Adaptation Plan to Climate Change in the municipality of Mértola will take place on December 13, at the end of the closing seminar of the «AdaptForChange» project, which takes place from 14:00 to 18:00, at the Cine-Teatro Marques Duque .
This document, which was built on dialogue with farmers, landowners, managers and other interested parties on how to manage forests and agriculture in the future, results from the conclusions of the «AdaptForChange» project.
At the event, these lessons will also be presented. This project, which is coordinated by the CE3c – Center for Ecology, Evolution and Climate Change, is the result of «almost two years of work with the objective of improving the success of reforestation in the Alentejo and promoting the adaptation of forests to climate change». explains the cE3c.
Large areas in Alentejo have been reforested in recent years with native species of holm oak and cork oak, but with a low success rate.
“To achieve its goals, the AdaptForChange project took an innovative approach. After an analysis of the reforestation campaigns carried out in the Alentejo over the last 60 years, to understand which methods allowed the highest success rates, the project developed a model that allows knowing which areas of the Alentejo should be promoted for natural or assisted regeneration, and which ones the most appropriate techniques for each case», he explains.
