The winning projects of the first Participatory Budget of Olhão are already known. Voting was completed on December 8th and the local authority expects that the works, one per parish, will be completed next year.
At Fuzeta, the winning proposal was the requalification of fishing support; in Moncarapacho, the creation of a leisure and car park next to the Escola EB 2,3 Dr. João Eusébio; in Olhão, the elimination of car traffic in the Riparian Area of the Markets; in Pechão, the creation of a social and children's park along the riverside and the Sports Complex; and in Quelfes, the redevelopment of Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian and the respective completion of the cycle path.
The Chamber of Olhão explains that, in total, 15 proposals from the population were submitted to scrutiny, three for each parish, and Fuzeta and Moncarapacho were "detached", so that both locations could be contemplated each with its project. The votes were made in person, but also by SMS.
"The people from Olho were called to decide on the application of a slice of the Municipal Budget and they corresponded, participating in the presentation of proposals and voting, which exceeded our expectations, considering that it is the first year that we are implementing this instrument of participatory democracy», says António Pina, mayor of Olhão.
According to the municipality, «about 5% of the municipality's population responded to the call and actively participated in the choice of projects that will now be implemented throughout 2017».
The total amount for the first edition of the Participative Budget of Olhão is 400 thousand euros, one of the largest in the south of the country.
«At the beginning of 2017, all the winning proposals will be included in the Municipal Budget and the expectation is that over the next year all works will be completed», concludes the municipality.
