The standard menhir, in Raposeira, warehouses supporting tuna fishing frames, in Boca do Rio, or even some ruins of what is thought to have been a church, in the place where the Farol of Cape São Vicente, were some of the secrets revealed in the fam trip in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, promoted by the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), yesterday, the 6th of December.

The initiative, part of the project «Rediscovering the Secrets of the Algarve», aims to make known to «professionals who help sell the destination», such as journalists and travel agents, the best that the Algarve has to offer.

The day began with a visit to the Interpretative Center of Vila do Bispo, with Adelino Soares, Mayor of Vila do Bispo, Desidério Silva, President of RTA, and Alexandra Gonçalves, Regional Director of Culture, welcoming journalists and agents Touristic.

Adelino Soares said, at this reception at the Interpretative Center of Vila do Bispo, that the county's heritage «is so much that we don't know where to go».

After the break, with carob cakes or almond pie, the place to discover was the standard menhir, near Raposeira. This is a limestone menhir, which is “6500 years old and is one of the first erected by man”. After the photo of Desidério Silva and Alexandra Gonçalves, each on the side of the menhir, the group headed to Boca do Rio, a space full of history.

In addition to the beach, where some (brave) people were, Boca do Rio keeps Roman archaeological remains, also having «great potential in terms of biodiversity» as it is home to several species. It is also there, right next to the beach, that there is a building that served as a support for tuna fishing boats, which dates back to Pombaline times.

And the curiosities do not end here: it was a few miles from Boca do Rio that a French admiral ship wrecked in the 7 Years' War, with "a large underwater spoil" present there, according to Ricardo Soares.

To regain strength for what was left, lunch was then served at Fort Beliche, with a heavenly view. On the menu: seafood xerém, chickpeas with lamb, almond pie and Algarve red wine. The afternoon was dedicated to getting to know the Farol of Cabo São Vicente, located at the end of the municipality of Vila do Bispo, where it was said that the intention is to create a museum in the engine room.

In this place, ruins of what is thought to have been a church that existed from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century were revealed. One of the objectives of this visit to Vila do Bispo was to make known the Umayyad Route in this county, an intention that was also fulfilled in Cabo de São Vicente.

It was there that the Kaniçat al-Ghurab was built, that is, the hermitage of Corvo described by the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi in the XNUMXth century, a place that, during the Umayyad period, was one of the main Mozarabic and Muslim pilgrimage sites in the Peninsula Iberian.

The day ended, close to the (many) people, who flocked to Cabo de São Vicente to watch the sunset.
