Health professionalsThe seminar «Communication in Health – Rights and Duties», which takes place on December 9th, between 10 am and 00 pm, in the Auditorium of the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve (ARS), in Faro, will debate issues related to communication in the health area, such as the most appropriate terminology to transmit the information or the criteria to be used, in terms of image, so as not to hurt susceptibilities.

The seminar opens, at 10:15 am, with Francisco George, director general of health, who will speak on the «public interest vs. social alarm», as well as the management of information in crisis situations in hospitals and health establishments. Francisco George will also address the topic “outbreaks and epidemics – media cases in Portugal”, where he will talk about the H1N1 virus, the Legionella outbreak in Vila Franca de Xira and the threat of the Nile virus.

At 11:15 am, Francisco Texeira da Mota, a specialist in Communication Law, will speak about journalistic treatment in cases of crime, illness or accident and the right to information and the protection of human dignity. "Media pressure and journalistic ethics" will also be one of the themes of this exhibition, as will "legislation and self-regulation in the transmission of live images".

Finally, at 12:15 pm, the chairman of the Board of Directors of Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte Carlos Martins will address topics such as "the disclosure of clinical data and the right to privacy", as well as "the restrictions on the disclosure of information in cases of media interest". The risks of new information technologies and the “reporter citizen and the proliferation of denouncements on social networks” will also be topics under the responsibility of Carlos Martins.

The Regional Health Administration says that this theme – health communication – “is currently facing new challenges, both for institutions and for journalists, who demand quick responses, especially in times of crisis”.
