This Thursday, at 10:00 am, the Raminha da BP filling station, in Portimão, will stage a simulacrum of an accident in the transport of hazardous materials, with product spillage. The exercise will also cover the Lar da Raminha of the Support Center for the Elderly of Portimão, which will be evacuated.
As explained by the Portimão Chamber, "this exercise intends to test and exercise the procedures for responding and sustaining operations to protect and rescue a serious accident, considering the collective risks for the municipal territory, and also the joint coordination between the entities who have responsibilities in the planning and management of emergencies, in particular in the context of the situation in question'.
Simultaneously, "BP Portugal will also assess the responsiveness of self-protection measures in a simulated emergency by the filling station."
The municipality of Portimo reveals that the simulated scenario will be “a collision between a light passenger vehicle and a tanker vehicle for the transport of hydrocarbons, which was leaving the site at the time. After the initial accident, an uncontrolled light goods vehicle collides with the previous ones, running over the driver of the light vehicle who, in the meantime, had left the vehicle, leaving an occupant imprisoned. As a result of the collision, two occupants of the third vehicle involved were projected, as well as a brown bottle, presumably containing acetylene».
During this series of accidents, «there is an immediate release of gasoline, quickly causing a spill of around 3000 liters at the site, which reaches the external drainage systems for rainwater. Following the spill, the building adjacent to the station – Lar da Raminha of the Elderly Support Center of Portimão – starts to feel an intense smell of gasoline and its users have to be evacuated from the site».
"This simulation is part of the operational plan of the BP Retail network, which, on an annual basis, carries out an exercise with its partners and respective authorities that represents the recognized risks", adds the Câmara de Portimão.
This exercise will be coordinated by the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Portimão and will also involve the Municipality of Portimão, the National Civil Protection Authority, the Fire Departments of Portimão, Lagoa and Monchique, the Portuguese Red Cross delegation from Portimão, the Portimão Territorial Detachment of the Guarda Nacional Republicana, the Portimão Police Division of the Public Security Police, the Municipal Water and Waste Company of Portimão, the Transportadora TJA, SA and the Support Center for the Elderly of Portimão, through Lar da Raminha, located on the perimeter of the simulacrum.
