Mero-1The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) will release 150 groupers, in Quarteira, on the 28th of November, and in Armação de Pêra, the following day. This action wants to contribute to the repopulation of these fish, which are almost extinct on the Algarve coast.

The meres, whose scientific name is Epinephelus marginatus, were produced and bred at the IPMA's Pisciculture Pilot Station in Olhão (EPPO), are identified with a yellow numbered mark and are between 3 and 4 years old.

The fish weigh between 700 grams and 2 kilos (average 1,3 kilos) and measure between 35 and 48 centimeters (average 41 centimeters). «The area chosen for release is characterized by having a large extension of rocky bottom at low depth, which is the habitat of this species', explains the IPMA.

This action aims to "alert the main users of the release area to collaborate with the investigation, in order to release the fish if they are caught alive and to report sightings of tagged fish".

These actions will have the collaboration of Armalgarve (Association of Shipowners of the Algarve), the Association of Fishermen of Armação de Pêra and the diving clubs of Quarteira and Armação de Pêra.
