EE_ri«Praxe e Traditions» is the title of the book by Elísio Estanque, professor and researcher at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, which will be released on November 23, at 9:30 am, in the Red Auditorium of the Faculty of Economics (building 9) , at the Campus of Gambelas of the University of the Algarve (UAlg).

According to its synopsis, this book “provides us with a reflective and critical look at the phenomenon of the so-called Academic Praxe, based on the author's careful observation at the university where academic traditions have their most remote roots: the University of Coimbra ».

«The question of practice is taken as a starting point to understand the current experiences, behaviors and subjectivities of the current generation of young university students. The study intends to combine history with sociology, questioning the role of tradition and the mechanisms that are reinvented, in the context of a consumer society in which there has been a growing massification of access to higher education in recent decades», he adds.

The practice, which has since become a focus of great controversy in Portugal, and also at the University of Algarve, “It is without a doubt a phenomenon endowed with great complexity and sociological richness”, says the synopsis.

And he explains: «right from the start because, beyond the normative attitudes – for or against – he aroused, there is a large mass of students who get involved in these rituals and, in the vast majority of cases, value them positively».

Elísio Estanque was born in Alentejo (Rio de Moinhos – Aljustrel), having lived and studied in Lisbon since his adolescence. He accompanied and actively participated in various social movements in the revolutionary period after April 25, 1974.

He received his PhD at the University of Coimbra, with a thesis on the footwear industry, based on participant observation in a factory in the sector, published under the title «Between the Factory and the Community» (Afrontamento publishing house, 2000).

Among his most recent books are «The Middle Class: Rise and Decline”(Editora FFMS, 2012) and “Middle Class and Social Struggles” (editor of Unicamp, 2015).
