ponds_07Two temporary ponds located on municipal land in Samouqueira, in Vila do Bispo, will be the target of conservation actions, in a joint initiative of the local Chamber and the League for the Protection of Nature (LPN), under the LIFE Charcos project.

For this purpose, the president of the Chamber Adelino Soares and Tito Rosa, president of the LPN, signed this Monday a collaboration protocol that aims to conserve these two temporary ponds, which have, among others, the Vicentinus Triops, a species of prehistoric shrimp that only exists in this area of the Southwest.

The protocol defines the terms of collaboration between the municipality of Vila do Bispo and the LPN in the implementation of the plan for the execution of actions to be carried out in the temporary ponds in the Samouqueira land, namely in the «management of the favorable conservation status of temporary ponds, in monitoring the impact of these management actions and the placement of information panels».

The municipality of Vila do Bispo will also collaborate in the execution of some interventions of the LIFE Charco projects that take place in the municipality, in support of LPN or project partners, such as restoration actions of those spaces or environmental awareness actions.

The two entities also undertake to collaborate, during and after the execution of the project, in the conservation of the Mediterranean Temporary Ponds, namely through complementary initiatives to this project.

The objective is “to implement habitat management measures in these spaces to prevent their degradation, ensure their maintenance and improve their long-term conservation status”.

"Raising the population's awareness of good practices to ensure the conservation of ponds and demonstrate conservation actions to encourage and support public policies for the application of appropriate support measures for their management and conservation" are other objectives to be achieved by signing this document .

The LIFE Charcos Project aims to conserve a priority habitat, the Temporary Mediterranean Ponds, which are increasingly threatened due to their ecological fragility and lack of knowledge of their natural value. The forms of territorial management, namely the intensification of industrialized agriculture, constitute one of the main and most recent factors in the decline of this habitat.
