Carlos Manuel MartinsThe Secretary of State for the Environment wants the new shopping center of the IKEA group, which is being created in the municipality of Loulé, to use wastewater from the WWTP for its heating and cooling system.

The government official, on the sidelines of the laying of the first stone of the WWTP Faro/Olhão, revealed to journalists that he launched “the idea that the installations that are being made, with a large commercial area [IKEA], close to Faro, may heat and cool it with waste water'.

According to the Secretary of State, the IKEA group “does it elsewhere near Lisbon, from the WWTP in Frielas, where I was manager. This is one of the most efficient facilities, from an environmental point of view, in this group».

This idea that Carlos Manuel Martins wants to apply to the commercial surface is, however, more comprehensive. «We have a high expectation that the effluents coming out of future WWTPs [Faro/Olhão and Companheira] can be reused in urban uses. In this regard, we already have a concrete approach with the Municipality of Portimão. Cleaning streets, gardens, cleaning containers and, at the limit, watering golf courses can be done with this water».

Carlos Manuel Martins added that «Águas do Algarve is carrying out these studies. When I went through here, I streamlined this process, which I hope can be continued».
