vitor alex climate changeVítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, participated, last October 25, in the "United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - from COP 21 (Paris, 2015) to COP 22 (Marrakech, 2016)", which held in the auditorium of the Assembly of the Republic, and where he presented the Municipal Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (EMAAC).

In addition to this, Vítor Aleixo also spoke of Loulé's participation in the «ClimAdaPT.local» project, being the only Algarve municipality present in this one.

It was, in fact, the adhesion to this project, in January 2015, that started the development of the Municipal Strategy «to improve the capacity to incorporate adaptation to climate change in its planning instruments and in its local interventions», says the Loulé Chamber.

The Strategy was approved in June 2016 and resulted in 28 adaptation options which, according to the mayor, "will have an implementation that will depend not only on municipal action but also on the joint action of different stakeholders."

In this context, for the Loulé municipality, «visible steps in the implementation of the options in different areas» are already being taken. And he lists a few: sustainable mobility, with the signage of shared lanes or the introduction of shared bicycles in schools, the redevelopment of public spaces that reflect the enhancement of pedestrian mobility, «whose most emblematic example is the Passeio das Dunas, in Quarteira», awareness-raising activities and environmental education or the implementation of measures for the rational use of energy.

Aiming to contribute to the preparatory work for the 22nd annual session of the United Nations Conference of the Parties (UNFCCC) on Climate Change, this initiative, in which Vítor Aleixo participated, was a broad debate around a theme that is part of the world political agenda.

The five questions about the Paris Agreement and its implications for Portugal, the European Union and on a global scale, and climate change in Portugal with regard to financing mitigation and adaptation were the main topics under debate.

Among the participants are representatives of governmental and non-governmental institutions linked to the environment, economy or technologies, universities and deputies from groups with parliamentary seats.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic Ferro Rodrigues and the Minister of Environment João Matos Fernandes presided over the opening and closing session, respectively.

This is not the first participation of the Câmara de Loulé in events of this kind. At the end of September, Vítor Aleixo and some municipal technicians attended the World Summit «Climate Chance 2016», which took place in the French city of Nantes.

«The mayor took an active part in this meeting, with a public intervention that made known Loulé's experience in terms of adaptation to climate change», concludes the City Council of Loulé.
