Six municipalities in the Algarve join the “European Mobility Week”

The European Mobility Week encompasses three types of initiatives: carrying out activities that promote the use of collective or non-polluting means of transport; the adoption of permanent measures by the municipalities, which also enhance the use of collective or non-polluting means of transport; and the adhesion to the “European Car Free Day”, which takes place on the 22nd.

Of the six Algarve municipalities, four will have all the initiatives: Loulé, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos. Already Faro and Tavira adopt only one.

Loulé, in addition to the “European Day without Cars”, which will close Praça da República for 8 hours, to motorized traffic, will also have, on September 16, the “Park(ing) Day” initiative.

This includes the closing of Avenida José da Costa Mealha, from 18 pm to 00 pm, «with the occupation of parking spaces with activities, exhibition and demonstration of various products and services linked to the theme of intelligent mobility, healthy lifestyles and environmental sustainability », according to the Chamber of Loulé.

For the 20th, a training action is scheduled, entitled “Sizing of Public Space for Sustainable Mobility”, at the Municipal Center of Quarteira, from 9:30 am to 13:00 pm.

Finally, on the 21st, there will be the seminar “Loulé Adapta – Urban Mobility”, from 14:30 pm to 18:30 pm, followed, on the 22nd, by the “100 Bikes at School Day” initiative, aimed at all students in the municipality.

With regard to the implementation of permanent measures, the municipality of Loulé adopted, this year, measures such as promoting the use of bicycles by young people or the purchase of electric buses.

Lagoa, like Loulé, will join the three initiatives. On September 16, “Park(ing) Day” will invite artists, designers and citizens to transform parking spaces into small temporary public parks, in Lagoa, in the Paços do Concelho Building, in Ferragudo, in Largo do Mercado, and in Carvoeiro, in the paid parking lot next to the parapharmacy.

The next day, there will be a zumba class and a walk in Largo da Senhora da Rocha.

The 18th will also be marked by physical activity with a walking and cycling route along the Ecovia do Litoral, in the section of the municipality of Lagoa, an activity developed in partnership with the Municipality's Sports Services and the municipality's Sports Associations.

For the 19th, 20th and 21st of September, the Mobility Fair will be held at the Lagoa Transit School. This initiative aims to «raise awareness of mobility issues, the promotion of road safety, and the presentation and use of the transit school space», refers to the website of the European Mobility Week. At this fair, there will be environmentally friendly bicycles, cars and motorbikes.

The “European Car Free Day” will also be celebrated, in Ferragudo, “where car circulation can be restricted in the downtown area between the Kiosk and the Market and the Salva-Vidas area and where there will be a promotion of Mobility similar to that of the Mobility Fair, there being the possibility of the general public and free of charge to use Tuk-tuk that circulate daily in the village at the service of tourists», adds the site.

As for the implementation of permanent measures, both the Estômbar and Lagoa safe route will be inaugurated. In addition to these, the Porches bike path will be inaugurated.

 

Faro:
The Municipality of Faro it will only fulfill one of the three initiatives: the “European Car Free Day”. On the 22nd, Largo Afonso III will be closed and activities with local entities and associations will be promoted at the site.

 

Tavira:
Tavira, just like Faro, will only join the European Car Free Day, an initiative that will include the closing of the following arteries of the city: Rua da Liberdade, Praça da República, Rua Dr. José Pires Padinha and Rua do Cais.

 

Portimao:
The Municipality of Portimão has not yet announced the activities it will carry out, despite being indicated on the European Mobility Week website as one of the three Algarve municipalities to participate in the three initiatives of this event.

Lagos will also participate in the three initiatives of this European Mobility Week. During these days, «various activities will be developed in partnership with local companies, Centro de Ciência Viva, Gyms, with the aim of sensitizing citizens to a change in behavior, in order to provide a healthier, more pleasant and accessible city for all» , says the website of the European Mobility Week.

From 16 to 22, there will be "Combined - Car Parks - Collective urban transport - Sport", in which the user, when parking his vehicle in the city's underground car parks, receives a free trip on collective urban transport - "A Onda ”. In turn, by taking free use of urban transport, you will receive a sporting day at the Municipal Company “Lagos em Forma”.

During these days, pedal and electric bicycles will be rented with a 30% discount for residents in the municipality of Lagos.

On the 17th, at 17 pm, there will be a concentration of bicycles, tricycles and prams, which will travel along Avenida dos Descobrimentos to Praça do Infante. The recipients of this initiative will be “especially children, adolescents, adults and the elderly”.

On September 19, the municipal company “Lagos em Forma” will promote various activities related to health and sport, from physical and nutritional assessments to workshops.

On the 20th, “Lagos em Forma” receives the same activities, but throughout the day. On September 21, in partnership with the Centro de Ciência Viva de Lagos, various activities will be developed throughout the day, until 17 pm, at Praça Gil Eanes, linked to intelligent mobility, with an exhibition of alternative vehicles.

Throughout the day, group classes will also be held, for the entire population, of zumba, pilates, in order to promote a healthier life.

Finally, on the 22nd of September, as part of the “European Car Free Day”, urban transport will be free throughout the day, on the 9 available circuits, which cover not only the city, but all parishes in the municipality. The tourist train will also be free all day.

There will also be a Gymkhana and several games about “Intelligent Mobility”, at Praça Gil Eanes and surrounding streets, at 10:00 am.

As for the adoption of permanent measures, the Câmara de Lagos is «preparing, together with AMAL, a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan», having already signed the protocol for the creation of infrastructures to support «cycling & walking» activities. .
