Professor at the University of Algarve joins the UN Group to assess the state of the marine environment

Maria_Joao_BebiannoMaria João Bebiano, full professor and director of the Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) at the University of Algarve (UAlg), will join a group of UN experts to assess the state of the marine environment in the 2017-2020 period.

The group is composed of 25 elements, five from each region, which are distributed as follows: Western Europe and other States, Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean and African States.

A first cycle of studies has already been carried out and culminated with an available report here.

Now, in this 2nd phase, the objective is to analyze and identify gaps and needs in scientific assessment, including socio-economic aspects and personnel needs in certain areas of training.

In addition to Portugal, represented by Maria João Bebiano, within the States of Western Europe and other States, experts from the United Kingdom, Greece, the United States of America and Australia are represented.

The expert group is also expected to bring together elements from the United Nations Agencies, such as the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

The Group of Experts will meet periodically at United Nations Headquarters and there will also be two groups of five workshops each, in different geographic regions.

 

Who is Maria João Bebiano?

Maria João F. Bebianno has a degree in Chemical Engineering – Chemistry and Processes Branch (1974) from Instituto Superior Técnico. PhD in Marine Ecotoxicology from the University of Reading (United Kingdom) (1990) and obtained the title of Aggregate at the University of Algarve (1999).

She is a Full Professor at the University of Algarve, exercising her pedagogical activity at the Faculty of Science and Technology, where she has been responsible for several disciplines in the field of Marine and Environmental Sciences at Licenciatura and Master's level.

She was the director of the Environmental Engineering Course and is currently the director of the Marine Science Course and the Marine and Coastal Management course and of the Department of Earth, Sea and Environmental Sciences. He is also a member of the General Council of the University of Algarve.

He held various university management positions, including vice president and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Water Resources Science and Technology Unit, member of the Assembly of Representatives of the Aquatic Resources Science and Technology Unit and the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences , President of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences, member of the Statutory Assembly of the Faculty of Sciences and Technologies and member of the Senate and of the University Assembly.

He worked at the National Institute of Fisheries Research (now IPMA) where he was responsible for the Technical-Scientific Cooperation Division (1980-1983).

Performed scientific and technical functions at the Polygon of Underwater Acoustics in the Azores (1974-1976). He was also a member of the National Commission Against Sea Pollution (1976-1983).

At the international level, he was part of the Portuguese Delegation that negotiated the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of ​​the United Nations(1978-1981). He was a member of the Portuguese Delegation to the Oslo Convention and the Paris Convention (currently known as OSPAR), and of Barcelona, ​​the International Council for the Exploration of the MAR (ICES) (1976-1980) and the UNESCO Intergovernmental Commission (COI) (1976-1983, 1996-2008).

She develops research at the Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences (CIMA) of which she was recently elected coordinator. He has been responsible for several research projects funded at national level and by the European Union in the field of Marine Ecotoxicology, which he pioneered in Portugal, with special emphasis on the study of the impact of organic and inorganic pollutants and their effects on species of environmental contamination and by applying proteomics analysis to the effect of environmental contaminants on biological systems.

He has supervised seven Postdoctoral and PhD students (17 completed and 2 ongoing, one of which in co-supervision). She is the author of several publications in Scientific Journals with referees (182) (h-37) and editor of several books and book chapters.

He is a member of several national and foreign scientific and professional societies (Society of Geography of Lisbon, Portuguese Society of Chemistry, Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, SETAC, SECOTOX, SICTA). She is currently president of the Portuguese Association of Women Scientists – AMONET, of which she was the president of the General Assembly.
