Odeleite Dam _1The project is not yet complete, but the idea and strategy are well defined. Castro Marim City Council wants to create a river beach in Odeleite, in the reservoir of the existing dam, to boost tourism in this parish, which is already much sought after by gastronomy and bring more people to the interior of the county.

«The project is being carried out and is well underway. Just today I had a meeting with the services of the Ministry of Environment in Faro about this topic. I hope that next year the beach already exists and that we can take a bath there,” said the mayor of Castro Marim Francisco Amaral, in an interview with Sul Informação.

Odeleite Dam _2The Castromarinense mayor does not hide the high expectations it has in relation to the future river beach of Odeleite, to be installed on land that was, however, acquired by the City Council. «The project is very interesting. It will have green areas, beach facilities and a seating area. It will be an important asset for the local economy», he considered.

And it's not even about putting Odeleite on the map, as there are already visitors from the region who purposely go to this village in Barrocal, even if it's not to go to the baths. “There are four or five restaurants there that the Spaniards have already discovered. We all know that in Spain people eat badly. On weekends it's crazy, they aim for Odeleite to go eat there», he illustrated.

“If we complement this gastronomic offer with a river beach, it will be gold on blue. I see this as a way to overcome desertification and isolation. I think things are well underway for Odeleite to be able to make a comeback», believes Francisco Amaral.

This is just one of the ideas that the executive from Castromarinense has, in the sense of boosting tourism in the county. In the pipeline, there is a park for motorhomes, which will be installed «on the football field», replacing the area destined for these vehicles, which already exists at the entrance to the village, which Francisco Amaral considers to be unworthy.

On the other hand, a network of cycle paths is being devised, which will complement the existing pedestrian and cycle routes, not least because, in the mayor's view, Castro Marim has «an immense potential in the field of environmental and nature tourism».
