church of santo antónio in LagosGuided visits to the Dr. José Formosinho Municipal Museum, Santo António Church and the Slave Market, an open day in the various municipal museum spaces or the opportunity to get to know, up close, the book where you can read the minutes of the session in which it was created the Museum (August 23, 1930), are some of the proposals that will mark the commemoration of 86 years of the Museum of Lagos.

On the same 23rd of August, UNESCO marks the International Day of Remembrance of the Slave Traffic and its Abolition, a theme that has everything to do with Lagos, especially after the opening of the Slavery Museum and the creation of the Slavery Route, discovering various spaces in the city.

As a matter of fact, in the guided visits to the Museum, Church and Slave Market, the privileged role of these equipments in the meeting of cultures will be highlighted, witnessed in collections of various origins.

The commemorations program also includes, at 19 pm, a conference, open to the public, on the theme “The Slaves of Vale Gafaria (Lakes): what their bones tell us”, with teachers Teresa Ferreira, Sofia Wasterlain, Ana Rufino and Catarina Coelho, from the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology of the Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra.

All initiatives are free, and some require mandatory registration.
