Murals welcome you to the city of Lagoa

Murals created by Lagoon artist Stephen Jones

The two main entrances to Lagoa, on the EN125 and on the access to Silves and Via do Infante, are presented this summer in a very colorful way, thanks to the murals created by the Lagoa artist Stephen Jones, which were commissioned by the União das Freguesias de Lagoa and Carvoeiro.

At the entrance to the EN125, towards Portimão/Lagoa, the mural depicts the most charismatic buildings and other constructions in the city – the Igreja Matriz, the Palácio Cor-de-Rosa, the Municipal Market, the Library, the Municipal Archive, the Convent of S. José, the monument to the combatants in the church garden, or the image of Our Lady of Fátima -, interspersed with images of landscapes from the Lagoon coast.

At the other entrance of the city, for those coming from Via do Infante or Silves, the theme is pottery, which was once one of the main industrial activities in the county, and is still present today, especially in the Porches area.

These urban art interventions, which also extended to bus stops and the neighboring town of Carvoeiro, are promoted by the União das Freguesias de Lagoa and Carvoeiro.

Joaquim João, president of the União de Freguesias, recalls that this autarchy has promoted «different actions, from the painting of welcome murals at the entrance of towns, murals representing our identity and history, murals in homage to our ancestors and some even representative of our territory'.

That municipality also brought to the Parish «a modern project, which until then only existed in the city of Porto, which consists of recovering and painting EDP's damaged, rusty and self-sticking boxes, turning them into pieces of art. This project began at Praia do Carvoeiro, in November 2015, and will soon be going to the city of Lagoa», he said.
