Before, the Bath of 29 (August) marked the end of the summer agricultural tasks and was a celebration and a kind of purification. Today, in Lagos, it is a true festival, with a program full of musical entertainment, beach entertainment, snacks, handicrafts and regional sweets, where there is no lack of the obligatory night bath.
Between the 27th and the 29th, the traditional Festa do Banho29 takes place at Cais da Solaria, which has long since become a popular event and is one of the main cultural events in the municipality of Lagos. As a way of remembering, reviving and preserving this tradition, and continuing an event already rooted in Lacobrigense culture, the municipality has prepared for these days a program that will have Iris, Chapa Dux and Ana Malhoa as the headliner, of this great party with free entry.
The event has the support of the Parish of São Gonçalo, ACRAL, Moto Clube de Lagos and the Barlavento Artisans Association.
“Its origins are confused. There are those who say that, on that day, the devil is on the loose and, therefore, only at night can you take a bath. There are those who link the night bath to old rites at the end of summer, fulfilled with different precepts in other parts of southern Europe. This custom has resisted tourism. They no longer come in groups, but continue to carry out the tradition in a discreet way. At his side, new groups of bathers appear today, more revelers and less rituals, who take advantage of this night to build bonfires, play guitars, roast sausages and tell stories. At midnight, the most daring enter the water. The others might get their foot wet. But everyone celebrates as they can the “Bath 29”».
