João_Vieira_6392Athlete João Vieira, born in Portimão, today withdrew from the 50 km march at the Olympic Games, after having covered less than 15 km. The race was won by the Slovakian Matej Toth, who completed the course in 3 hours, 40 minutes and 58 seconds.

Playing in his fourth Olympics, João Vieira was in 56th position, out of a total of 80 athletes, when he gave up. The person from Portimo had already fulfilled the 20-kilometer race, which he managed to complete, and in which he reached the 31st position.

The other Portuguese competitors in the 50 km march, Pedro Isidoro and Miguel Carvalho were in 31st and 35th places, respectively.

Pedro Isidoro completed the 50 kilometers in 4 hours, 3 minutes and 42 seconds; the other Portuguese athlete in the competition made the time of 4 hours, 8 minutes and 16 seconds.

As for the podium of these 50 kilometers march: in 2nd place in the race was the Australian Jared Tallent, who won the silver medal, by completing the 50 kilometers in 3 hours, 41 minutes and 16 seconds. Closing the podium was the Japanese Hirooki Ari, who won the bronze, finishing the race in 3 hours, 41 minutes and 24 seconds.
