Ana Cabecinha, an athlete from the Clube Oriental de Pechão, won this afternoon the 6th place in the 20 kilometers march, in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Algarve marcher was 48 seconds behind the winner of the competition, the Chinese Hong Liu.

Sixth place is the best ever classification of the Portuguese march in the Olympic Games.

But the Algarvian hiker could even have given up: “I woke up with horrible back pains, it was very difficult to warm up and I had to ask the physiotherapist to take the pain away,” Ana Cabecinha told reporters.

But, even so, in suffering, the Portuguese marcher left, the pain lessened as she went, but she had already returned when the 20km march ended.

Cabecinha, who was always close to the front group, finished the race with 1h29m23s, improving his best classification in the Olympic Games, which took place in Beijing, in 2008, when he reached 8th place.

In relation to the other two Portuguese athletes in the competition, Inês Henriques was in 12th place and Daniela Cardoso was 37th.

In medals, in addition to Hong Liu, who won the gold, Maria Guadalupe González, from Mexico, was second, and Xiuzhi Lu, also from China, won the Bronze.
