Ilha da Culatra will be the scene of an emergency evacuation simulacrum that the National Maritime Authority (AMN) will promote this Friday, starting at 15:30 pm.
The exercise aims to make this procedure known to the general public, taking into account the high number of evacuations carried out every year from the housing centers and bathing areas of the barrier islands under the jurisdiction of the captaincy of the Port of Olhão, namely Fuzeta-Mar, Armona, Culatra, Hangars and Farol.
According to AMN, every year, on average, «180 evacuations from these centers are carried out, of which 50% occur during the bathing season». "With the increase in the influx of bathers, visitors and tourists to the islands, it appears that this year, compared to the same period last year, evacuations increased by more than 20 percent," he explained.
The number of people increases, but the resources do not, which forces "an even greater commitment of the elements of the ISN that man the Estação Salva-vidas (ESV), as well as of the entire structure that supports them". This station has two teams permanently: one on standby for 30 minutes and the other on standby for 12 hours.
During evacuations, arrival at the site takes an average of 40 minutes. “But it can take 1 hour, depending on different factors, namely, the location of the evacuation and the meteo-oceanographic conditions”, stressed the AMN. Evacuations of the sick and wounded are articulated with the INEM.

– 183 evacuations between September 2015 and 26 August 2016
– 86 evacuations during the 2015 bathing season
– 100 evacuations (until 26 August) in the 2016 bathing season
– 151 evacuations between January 1 and August 26, 2016.
