Ten private social support institutions in the municipality of Portimão received yesterday, from the hands of businessman Paulo Lopo, checks for 2500 euros each to use in their social work. It was the delivery of the consideration for the implementation of the project Portimao Summer Experience, in Praia da Rocha.
The partnership contract for the installation, during this summer, of the new nightlife space, promoted at the site of the former Sasha, which was unanimously approved by the City Council of Portimão, foresaw, in return, the delivery of 30 euros by the company to various actions of a social nature in the municipality of Portimão.
Two weeks ago, during the catastrophic fires in Madeira, the Municipality of Portimão, at the proposal of its president Isilda Gomes and with the consent of the businessman Paulo Lopo, approved, also unanimously, the delivery of 5000 euros to the Municipality of Funchal, in a gesture of solidarity.
"We took 500 euros from each of you, to send 5000 euros to Madeira", said the mayor, during the ceremony for handing over the checks, which took place yesterday afternoon in the main hall of Paços do Concelho. «But Madeirans are also Portuguese and they also need our help. They need them today, let's hope that one day we won't need us, for similar reasons,” added Isilda Gomes.
On the other hand, businessman Paulo Lopo stressed: «although it is not very great support, it is given willingly».
The businessman added that the Portimao Summer Experience it is a project that “makes perfect sense to exist”. «Portimão needs to have more tourism and the night, with quality, is very important, as seen in Vilamoura».
«The Chambers must not pay for these things to happen, on the contrary, it is the promoters who must develop their work and share the profits with society. This serves businessmen, the Chamber and civil society», he also said.
Next year, the exploration of the entertainment space on the sandy beach of Praia da Rocha will be put up for public tender, but the mayor from Portimo, taking into account the «excellent experience», hoped that «next year Paulo Lopo will be here again".
The ten supported institutions were also unanimously chosen by the Portimão Chamber. And they are: Catraia, GRATO, Nossa Senhora da Conceição House, CRACEP, Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Portimão, Cáritas, Parish Center of Quinta do Amparo, Lar Bom Samaritano, Parish Center of Mexilhoeira Grande, Red Cross – Delegation of Portimão .
“It feels good to be here distributing money to those in need. I know it's a drop of water in the ocean of your problems, but it's more than you had yesterday», the Mayor also took the opportunity to say.
“We've come a long way: we've gone from years in which the City Council invested hundreds of thousands of euros in these nightlife venues, to a year in which people and institutions in Portimão receive money,” concluded Isilda Gomes.
