Scholarships45 scholarships will be available in the next academic year 2016/2017 for students from Lagos, announced the City Council of Lagos.

This year, candidates holding a graduate degree may also be admitted to the competition, as part of courses with an integrated master's degree. The measure was unanimously approved at the Chamber Meeting on 20 July.

The number of scholarships to be awarded in the Municipality of Lagos increased from 35 to 45, in order to respond to the demand for support that has existed in this area. The attribution of 45 Scholarships in the next academic year means an investment by the municipality of around 95.000 euros.

Last year, 25 scholarships were initially approved, and later on, the possibility was opened for another 10, with a total of 35 scholarships being awarded for the 2015/2016 academic year, at a time when 49 applications were admitted to the competition ( it should be noted that some applicants later withdrew their applications, as they received support from the higher education institutions themselves).

This year, it was also decided not to award research grants, channeling all the available funds to the first (study grants).

Each scholarship has a value corresponding to 40% of the national minimum salary, ie 212 euros, from October to July, paid monthly over 10 months.

For members of the jury of this competition, and to accompany councilor Sara Coelho, who holds the responsibility for Education and who will preside over it, vice-president Hugo Pereira and councilor Luís Barroso were once again invited.

It is the responsibility of the Municipality to “participate in the provision of support services to people in vulnerable situations, in partnership with the competent entities of the central administration and with private social solidarity institutions, under the conditions set out in municipal regulations”.

Once again, the Mayor Maria Joaquina Matos highlighted the importance of this support in the area of school social action, again defending that, in municipalities far from academic circles, such as Lagos, “it makes perfect sense that the Municipality , within the scope of its competences and to the extent of its financial possibilities, can support students in the municipality, favoring their qualification and, in this way, their employability, an essential condition for the construction of a life project in professional, personal and family terms ”.
