dune walk 7Quarteira has, since May, “a garden planted by the sea”. On foot, by bicycle, running or walking, it is now possible to go from Quarteira to Vilamoura and enjoy both the sea, which is so close, and the trees and plants that line the new Passeio das Dunas.

The Passeio das Dunas came to put an end to one of the areas with the worst reputation in the Algarve, the Pescadores district, and to create a pedestrian and cycling connection between two of the main tourist areas in the municipality of Loulé.

Upon its opening, Chamber president Vítor Aleixo stated that “the tourist centers of Quarteira and Vilamoura no longer have this wall, which impeded a healthy relationship between them”.

At a cost of 4 million, the work was inaugurated on 15 May by Prime Minister António Costa, having been financed by the OP Algarve21, with a contribution from the ERDF, in the amount of approximately 2,9 million euros.

Although the trees do not provide shade yet, taking into account that they were planted a short time ago, Passeio das Dunas is already being one of the places chosen by tourists and residents for their walks and bike rides, in this hot Algarve summer of 2016.
