Culatra IslandThe inhabitants of Culatra will celebrate another anniversary of the association that represents them, this Tuesday, but politicians and representatives of public entities will stay at the door.

The Association of Residents of Ilha da Culatra decided not to invite representatives of political parties or entities, as a form of protest at the impasse in the official recognition of the Culatra housing nucleus and the consequent legalization of housing there.

AMIC had the expectation of being able to announce the regularization of the situation and the recognition of the «Aldeia da Culatra» on this date. "Unfortunately and on the contrary, what can be seen is that Ilha da Culatra was abandoned by the local and central authorities and, therefore, the only thing that can be announced on July 19, 2016 is that the infrastructure and the public space is abandoned and the Culatra remains without legal/administrative status and left to itself», says the association, in a press release.

«AMIC has always been available and was concerned with actively participating in all administrative decisions that, directly or indirectly, could affect the residents, namely taking a position in the public discussion of the POOC and the Polis. Based on the measures contained in these plans, expectations were created that, through them, the situation of Culatra would be definitively or substantially regularized. On the contrary, everything remains the same and the lack of proper regulation is putting into question all the work carried out», he added.

The Culatrenses also speak of "the many promises made by all political forces" in recent years, which ended up never being fulfilled. This led to AMIC's decision to "celebrate this date solely and exclusively with the population, not inviting to the event any Public Entity or political representative, as a form of protest, thus expressing the population's discontent".

In the past, recalls the association, «all entities shared with the population the results of the work carried out, culminating with the respective inaugurations» on the anniversary day of AMIC. «It was like that with Electric Energy, Drinking Water, School, Social Centre, Network of Crosswalks, Porto Abrigo, Airstrip for Emergency Medical Helicopter and other infrastructure to support the population», he recalls.
