UCC - Seizure of hashishThis Thursday, the GNR Coastal Control Unit seized 2170 kilos of hashish and detained a Spanish citizen, as part of an operation in Cabanas de Tavira.

During a night surveillance carried out in that part of the Algarve coast, in an operation that began at the end of yesterday, the military "noticed a vessel that entered the Tavira bar, making suspicious movements."

The means on land and at sea were immediately activated to follow the vessel and find out its destination.
At around 1:00 am, the Coastal Control Unit verified that the boat had headed for a small beach about 200 meters from the Fort of S. João da Barra, where the narcotic was unloaded.

The authorities then advanced and seized, in the Ria Formosa, a vessel with Spanish registration, as well as, on land, a van waiting for hashish, near Cabanas de Tavira.

The 46-year-old Spaniard, who was unloading 70 bales of hashish from Morocco, was also detained on the beach. Authorities assume he was the driver of the van, as he had the keys in his pocket and was close to the vehicle.

When the military intervened, some bales were on the sand and others were already inside the vehicle that would be used for transport.

As for the two or three crew members of the vessel where the drugs were transported, they managed to escape the authorities, fleeing on foot through the “dense vegetation”. The boat was seized.

The operation ended around 5:00 am, and the investigation is now under the responsibility of the Judiciary Police.
