The 15 canoes acquired by the Parish Council of Olhão at the beginning of the year have not stopped since the beginning of the summer, and have already allowed “unique moments of leisure for hundreds of children and young people, in the idyllic setting of Ria Formosa”, according to that entity.
The vessels are being made available to clubs, associations, IPSS, schools and the prison establishment of the county, free of charge, since the beginning of spring and "judging by the return, it is already a winning bet", considered the president of the Parish Council of Olhão Luciano Jesus.
The purchase of these canoes aimed to "awaken the taste for nautical sports, in the youngest and beyond" and "definitely turn Olhão and the people of Olhão to the sea".
And nothing better than starting with the younger ones, who have already had the opportunity to enjoy the Ria Formosa aboard one of the canoes, but who will now have even more regular access to this equipment.
"New protocols are already on the agenda, to be celebrated in the next school year with 1st and 2nd Cycle schools, so that from March onwards, more children can enjoy the learning of the canoeing modality", announced the Parish Council of Olhão.
The vessels were «tested and approved» in the «Duathlon Pais & Filhos», held in April as part of the VII edition of the Quelfes Games. Since then, especially with the arrival of the heat, they have been «very much in demand».
The Junta de Olhão points out that "any entity may request canoes free of charge to carry out activities, and must contact the Parish of Olhão two weeks in advance."
«For the realization of the initiatives already carried out, the collaboration of the young interns of the Olhão sports association “Quatro ao Cubo”, a partner in this canoeing project since the beginning, has been decisive”, added the Parish Council of Olhão.
