speed radarThe EN125 will have three fixed speed cameras, which will be installed by the end of the first quarter of 2017 . This is one of the measures to reduce accidents on what is, at national level, the “most dangerous road we have”, according to the Secretary of State for Internal Affairs.

The placement of the radars was announced yesterday by Jorge Gomes, who was at the headquarters of the Intermunicipal Community of Algarve (AMAL) to ratify the protocol between ANSR and the Algarve municipalities, for the creation of a Regional Road Safety Plan.

For the Secretary of State, the EN125 is “extremely worrying. 125 is known across the country right now as the most dangerous we have. The other “roads of death” are thankfully no longer. They are already highways».

SE Internal Administration Jorge GomesTherefore, the EN125 will receive three of the 50 radars that will be installed across the country by March 2017. «We are going to install three fixed radars, or rather, they are radar boxes. Then either there's the radar inside or not. Some say that, as the radars are fixed, everyone knows where they are and then they go slower. But that's what we want, for people to slow down. If you go slower every five kilometers, or every ten kilometers, we reach the goal. People will have to slow down to avoid being caught speeding», explained Jorge Gomes.

However, for the Secretary of State, the practical effect of this measure in the Algarve will not be as evident as in other parts of the country, because most of the drivers who will go through the radar are not Portuguese, so it will be difficult for them to pay the fine. .

«The survey of the car is immediate, it goes directly to ANSR, but we are going to have a problem, because 50% of drivers [using the 125] are not nationals, so the practical effect will not be great».

Even so, the government official says that "it may be that something can be reduced" in terms of accidents.
