Silves_capital of OrangeThat Silves oranges are the best is a fact that all the Algarve – and not only – have known for a long time, not least because this county is also home to the largest citrus production area. But the Municipality of Silvense wants to reinforce this notoriety and launched, on Saturday, in Castelo, the new brand «Silves: Capital da Laranja».

The brand, owned by the Municipality of Silves, was launched in front of several dozen guests, including regional entities, mayors and producers in the municipality.

The brand can now be used by producers in the municipality and appears as a way to reinforce, in the regional, national and international consumer, the unique character and identity of this emblematic product of the municipality, underlining the favorable positioning of the product and associating it with the name " Silves”.

The recognition of the importance of this unique product led the current municipal executive to promote the creation and registration of the brand, which will seek to promote the heritage and territory, associating the orange product with its history, organoleptic qualities and market importance.

According to Rosa Palma, president of the Chamber, the launch of this brand aims to «give a new visibility and notoriety to this product, so emblematic of our land and, through this, contribute to the promotion of the territory and agricultural culture itself, stimulating everything what is associated with the production of citrus fruits, and promoting the identification of Silves with oranges».

The mayor also highlighted, in her intervention, the economic weight of the citrus industry in the municipality, with about 2200 producers, occupying an area of ​​more than 6000 hectares.

The orange, which is «the second most consumed fruit in the world», only surpassed by apples, found in the municipality of Silves a combination of favorable factors, such as the climate and soil that allow various citrus species to thrive here «with exceptional characteristics» , as Rosa Palma defended, quoted by the newspaper Terra Ruiva.

Considering Silves orange as a «product that promotes feelings», Rosa Palma reinforced the idea of ​​defending «the unique character and identity of this emblematic product of the municipality».

The “Silves: Capital da Laranja” brand logo consists of a cross-section of an orange (where the buds can be clearly identified), with a cutout at its bottom corresponding to the profile of the city's castle, promoting, thus, a direct and immediate association between what is Silves' best-known patrimonial element – ​​the castle – and the fruit – orange.

The brand will also serve as hat to various promotional actions throughout the year, namely the Sunsets do Castelo, a gastronomic weekend with an orange flavor, sports competitions, discussion forums between producers and an event dedicated exclusively to oranges, to be promoted next November. It will be a new version, more updated and with other parallel initiatives, of the former Feira da Laranja.
