The six crew members of the fishing boat “Avô Melro”, which ran aground this morning at Arrifana beach (Aljezur), have already been rescued by the Portuguese Navy's EH101 helicopter, and all are well, said the spokesman for the Navy.
The six fishermen were taken to Air Base No. 6 (Montijo), where the aircraft landed at 9:05 am, with the six crew members in stable condition and without the need for medical support, announced the Navy.
"As the weather was very adverse, it was not possible to land in the vicinity to leave the fishermen in the area, so they were transported to Montijo," added Carvalho Pinto, commander of the Port of Lagos Captaincy.
The boat was stranded «on the outer stones of Arrifana beach», below the fortress, during the night, «in an area of very difficult access, with a lot of swells».
According to Captain Carvalho Pinto, although the authorities are trying to «understand if there is a possibility of it leaving the place», «it will hardly be able to leave», since the vessel Avô Melro «is completely damaged».
The alert for the stranding of the fishing boat was received at 05:59 am this morning at the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisbon), which immediately instructed the fishermen to «wear their life jackets and make the raft ready. saves lives".
