manif of the islanders 2It was with red carnation in hand, mixed with the flags of Portugal, that three hundred people, of all ages, demonstrated today, April 25, in the nucleus of Farol from Culatra Island, against the continuation of demolitions on the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

To culminate the protest, the protesters formed the letters SOS on the sandy beach of Farol.

One of the participants in the protest, which took place in the nucleus of the Farol, belonging to the municipality of Faro, was António Pina, president of the neighboring Municipality of Olhão. The socialist mayor, in statements to RTP, said that "these houses on the islands were a conquest of the people from Olho and the Farenses after the 25th of April", defending that "we need to be freed from this dictatorship of the presidency of the Polis Society."

António Pina added that the demolitions "already seem to be a personal matter for the president of Sociedade Polis".

Firmino Júlio, director of that Residents' Association, also in statements to RTP, stressed that, despite this, "46 precautionary measures are still in the court for decision."

He added that the Association is “preparing, with our lawyers, a new process to defend ourselves and all the buildings on the island of farol, which is a universe of 210 dwellings».

On the other hand, after being dismissed in the first instance of the Administrative Court of Loulé, the injunction filed by the Chamber of Olhão is still awaiting the decision on the appeal made to the Supreme Administrative Court. "We await the court's position," said President António Pina today.

According to the SOS Ria Formosa/Je Suis Ilhéu Movement, which promoted the protest, this was “a cry for help and protest against those who want to destroy the communities on the barrier islands, against pollution, against everything that has harmed our Ria Formosa and those who work or use it».
