PORTUGUESE CAMARA ORCHESTRAThis Friday, March 4th, at 21 pm, the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra gives a concert in the Municipal Auditorium of Lagoa, where the Concerto for Clarinet and Strings, by the Portuguese composer Armando Mota, will premiere worldwide. years living in the Algarve.

The program also includes pieces by Antonín Dvorak (Serenade for strings in E Major, op. 22) and Benjamin Britten (Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, Op. 10).

The Portuguese Chamber Orchestra will be directed by conductor Pedro Carneiro, and will be a soloist in Clarinete António Saiote.

Who is who:

PEDRO CARNEIRO, co-founder, artistic director and principal conductor of the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, he has been captivating audiences throughout Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia, in his triple activity as instrumentalist, head of orchestra and composer.

He studied piano, cello and trumpet since he was 5 years old. He received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he completed a degree in percussion and orchestra direction with the distinction “Head of Department Award”.

He also followed Emilio Pomàrico's orchestral conducting courses at the Accademia Internazionale della Musica in Milan.

Internationally acclaimed as one of the most important percussionists of today, he played, in absolute debut, close to a hundred works and regularly performs as guest soloist in some of the most prestigious international orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Iceland Symphony, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the São Paulo State Symphony or the Leipzig Radio Symphony.

Some of his record works were awarded prizes, in particular his monograph by Iannis Xenakis recorded in 2004, considered by the international press as a reference recording.

 

ANTÓNIO SAIOTE is an internationally renowned clarinetist, educator and conductor. He performed concerts and masterclasses in more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia and America.

He taught at the Escola Superior of the University of Lisbon and at the Catholic University of Aveiro. His students played in several orchestras in Portugal and won several national and international awards.

He was a member of international juries in Warsaw, Rome, Toulon, Seville, Ghent, Constancia, Kortrijk and Caracas. Organized the World Clarinet Congress in Porto. In the last 10 years, he has been developing his activity as a conductor with increasing success.

He has directed orchestras in Spain, Lithuania, France, Venezuela, and the most important Portuguese orchestras. As a clarinetist and conductor, he premiered many works by Portuguese and foreign composers. He has recorded several records and reference recordings on Portuguese national radio. He is currently a professor at the Superior School of Music and Performing Arts in Porto and artistic director of the Symphonic Orchestra.

 

ARMING MOTA was born in Lisbon in 1950, began his piano studies at the age of 4 and performed for the first time in public at the National Conservatory at the age of 5 years.

He studied piano with Campos Coelho and Lourenço Varela Cid, and received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkain Foundation for nine years. He later settled in Vienna, Austria, with a scholarship from the Institute of High Culture, where he was admitted to the Hochschule fur Musik uns Darstellende Kunst, and attended the Vienna Conservatory.

He worked in several countries and, in 1991, he returned to Portugal, years later founding the Conservatório Regional de Tavira. Since 2003, he has been a member of the staff of Academia de Lagos.

 

THE PORTUGUESE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, which has had Public Utility status since 2013, was born in 2007 to create a launching pad for new national talents in classical music.

Since the beginning, OCP has maintained an annual protocol with the CCB Foundation, with regular presence on the Dias da Música in Belém.

The internationalization took place in 2010, at the City of London Festival, with 4 stars from The Times newspaper critic. Between 2007 and 2015, he collaborated several times with the Companhia Nacional de Bailado, participated in the main National Music Festivals and performed in numerous cities in the North and South of Portugal.

The most diverse OCP projects move 4 orchestras and more than 200 musicians every month: a professional orchestra, the Academic Orchestra of the University of Lisbon, the CERCIOEIRAS ensemble and the JOP.
