Olhão once again offers a giant (and supportive) dish to everyone who wants to eat it

folar-giant-olhao-01An 80-meter long folar will be offered to the population and visitors on Saturday, the 19th, from 10:30 am, at Largo da Restauração, next to the Igreja Matriz in Olhão. It is the fulfillment of an initiative that has already become a tradition in Olhão, around Easter, in a “feast” with a solidarity nature.

This is the third year that the Head Filipe Martins, owner of the Kubidoce bakery, promotes this initiative, always with the support of the Municipality of Olhão, with the aim of promoting this ex libris of the sweets from Olhão. also the giant king cake, around christmas, it has already become a tradition of the court.

The recipe for this folar is truly Pantagruelic: more than 520 kilos of yellow sugar, 200 kilos of flour, 200 kilos of butter, 100 kilos of margarine, 20 liters of olive oil, 10 liters of arbutus, 10 liters of honey, 15 kilos of almond , 50 kilos of sweet potatoes, 15 kilos of candied oranges, 15 kilos of figs, two kilos of cinnamon and another two kilos of fennel, as well as about 500 eggs, 10 kilos of yeast and 15 kilos of chocolate.

O Head pastry chef reveals the varieties that make up this giant folar: “in addition to the traditional Olhão folar, honey and olive oil and Serra folar, we have also developed variations of sweet potato, chocolate and fig with almonds, the novelties of this year”.

Folar_2Several and sweet reasons to stop by Largo da Restauração on Saturday morning, to which is added the solidarity aspect of the event: for each slice of folar, a symbolic donation will be requested, which will revert, this time, in favor of ADAPO – Associação de Defense of Animals and Plants of Olhão.

The initiative also counts on the collaboration of wiretaps from Olhão and the support of the Makro store in Faro, which will supply the products to the giant folar.

“The Folar, characteristic of the Easter festive season, has become a double tradition for Olhão with the annual production of a giant version that is offered to the population. For Makro, being linked to events like this that also combine a solidary aspect, means supporting the county's tradition, dynamization and highlighting the festive actions that take place in this season”, says Carlos Bernardo, director of the Makro de Store Faro.
