The Algarve's municipalities want the immediate suspension of demolitions on the Ria Formosa barrier islands. At AMAL's meeting yesterday afternoon, the mayors unanimously “decided to demand and present to the Government a request for the immediate suspension of the demolition plan planned for the Hangars and Farol, on the island of Culatra».

Furthermore, AMAL asks for “the “clarification of objectives” of the POLIS Society”.

«The extension of the Polis Litoral Ria Formosa Society for another year, the recent statement by the Minister of the Environment regarding the Government's action, which seems to differ little from the posture of the previous governing body, as well as other “not very reassuring” signs regarding the demolition program , are at the origin of this position taken by the Algarve's municipalities», explains AMAL.

The mayors demand “concrete confirmation of the Society's objectives and plan of action, admitting that they suspect the continued intention to demolish the entire building, including the Hangars and agglomerations Farol Spring, implanted in areas without direct action of the sea».

In addition to the request to suspend the demolitions, the Algarve authorities decided to “reiterate the proposal, not accepted by the previous Government, of granting the Faro of the public domain of areas similar to urban agglomerations of the barrier islands, allowing the Municipality of Faro manage those territories, in the best interests of the populations, similarly, moreover, to what was authorized in Olhão when the concession of Ilha da Armona was renewed”.

Finally, the 16 Algarve municipalities want “the assessment of the adequacy of territorial management plans and instruments for the Ria Formosa area, taking into account the balance between the natural resources under protection and the economic and cultural value of the population centers ».

According to AMAL, explanations are urgently needed, since “a feeling of uncertainty has been established among the populations residing in the so-called barrier islands, in which many of the buildings at risk of demolition correspond to buildings inscribed in the matrix. Furthermore, measures to protect the natural heritage of Ria Formosa must, in parallel, defend the heritage and interests of the resident communities, which in many cases live off the resources of the Ria Formosa itself».
