INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MONUMENTS and SITESA guided tour by the athlete Carlos Cabral himself through the retrospective exhibition of his sporting career, scheduled for 11:00 am and 15:00 pm on April 16, at the Municipal Stadium, will be the highlight of the celebrations, in Lagos, of the International Day of Monuments and Sites .

To participate in these commented visits to the exhibition «Carlos Cabral – 50 years of sporting glories», interested parties must register by April 14 at the Dr. José Formosinho Municipal Museum, by calling 282 762 301 or by email at museum@ cm-lagos.pt.

This year, the theme of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which takes place on April 18, is “Sport, a Common Heritage”. The Municipality of Lagos will, once again, join this initiative and organized a program of activities around this theme, which takes place between the 16th and 24th of April.

So, also on the 16th, but at 21 pm, there will be the concert “Baroque em Talha Dourada”, in Ireja de Santo António. The stage is a genuinely Baroque building, classified as a National Monument since 30. The cycle is the result of a partnership between the municipality and the Academy of Music of Lagos. Access is free, but subject to the number of seats (1924).

April 17th will be an Open Day at the Museum and at Forte da Bandeira, with free entry, from 10:00 am to 13:00 pm and from 14:00 pm to 18:00 pm.

On the 23rd, between 15:00 pm and 18:00 pm, there will be a guided tour “The history of the county told by its Heritage”, whose meeting point is Avenida dos Descobrimentos (near CTT). This is a guided visit to the natural and religious heritage of the towns of Odiáxere and Luz, included in the cycle «Walks with History – 2016».

An eight-kilometer walk, called the Sport Heritage Route, which starts at 10:00 am and ends at 13:00 pm, departing from the Municipal Stadium, is the proposal for the 24th of April.

The walk is open to the community in general, which aims to make known some of the city's sports facilities, from a cultural and sporting perspective.

The organization recommends the use of sunscreen and comfortable shoes, as well as the possession of water and energetic foods.

However, between the 18th and 24th of April, there will be featured pieces at the Dr. José Formosinho Municipal Museum, next to which will be placed a badge alluding to the theme of this year's International Day of Monuments and Sites, alluding to the relationship between the theme and the piece. . On the page of Museum Facebook, information about the parts will be made available.

This year's theme – “Sport, a Common Heritage” – launched by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites), has as its main objective the exaltation of the cultural and social importance of sport, pointing out «the irreplaceable role of countless associations, clubs, municipalities, museums and other organizations, public and private, in the formation and consolidation of the identity of communities»1, and the highlighting of the different forms of heritage associated with sport (buildings, places, traditions, practices and objects of different natures).

Above any other purpose, the need to "alert and raise awareness of the importance of knowledge, protection and enhancement of heritage" is at stake.

The themes chosen for this year give rise to a multiplicity of activities, alluding to various types of heritage. Under the motto “Sport, a Common Heritage”, “stadiums, gymnasiums, swimming pools, school equipment, museums, racecourses, circuits, archaeological sites and artefacts, sports equipment, costumes and accessories, trophies, posters, paintings, sculptures can be evoked , postcards, stamps, newspapers, photographs, films, image and sound files, traditional games».
