Construction work on Avenida Norte de Quarteira began this Monday. This new avenue will integrate the section between the roundabout at the main entrance to the city and the EN 396, towards Loulé.
According to the Municipality of Loulé, "because it fits within the urban area, since the northern limit of the intervention coincides with the beginning of the locality sign, the urban section of this road will have the characteristics of an infrastructured, tree-lined, landscaped avenue, illuminated, equipped with sidewalks, pedestrian crossing areas and urban furniture, thus imposing an improvement in traffic flow and a reduction in speed at the most problematic points of the road».
The municipality adds that "the current road will have two lanes in the direction of Loulé-Quarteira and will include a cycle lane and the construction of two platforms, respectively the east and west, separated by a landscaped lane that will include the desired trees to maintain. The platform to the east, the most visible part of the work, will support an automobile lane in the Quarteira-Loulé direction, a cycle path and a sidewalk. The west platform will be occupied by sidewalk».
Although this work intends to preserve the pine and cedar trees that already exist on the road, twenty of these trees "are dead or sick and will be felled and replaced, and more than a hundred new trees are expected to be planted".
The Municipality of Loulé also explains that the intervention on EN 396 "will only pass through this section because, despite the Municipality's intentions to requalify the entire length of the road, the remaining part of the road is assigned to IP Infraestruturas de Portugal and not to the Municipality." .
