The Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food was one of the guests at the Gala Lagoa Cidade do Vinho 2016, which took place on Saturday, the 20th, at the Centro de Congressos do Arade, in Parchal.

Luís Medeiros Vieira presided over the awards ceremony for the “Contest of Labels”, promoted by the municipality, under the theme “Lagoa Sabor da Cultura – 2015 – Year of Wine and Vineyard”.

In addition to the hosts – the mayor of Lagoa Francisco Martins and the councilor Luís Encarnação, responsible for the City of Wine -, the initiative was also attended by the vice president of the neighboring municipality of Portimão, Castelão Rodrigues, who is himself very connected to the theme of wine for having been regional director of Agriculture, as well as with Carlos Garcias, president of the Regional Wine Commission of the Algarve, the regional director and deputy director of Agriculture, Fernando Severino and José Graça, among other personalities.

The label competition had 42 participants, all students from Escola Secundária de Lagoa and Nobel Escola Internacional, who responded to the Municipality's challenge to create labels for wine bottles, in the red, white and rosé category. Local producers were part of the selection jury.

But the Gala program had started an hour earlier with the release of “De Vento em Pipa – When the Wine and the Man Invented Lagoa”, by the photographer and ethnobotany researcher Susana Neves, published by the Lagoa City Council.

After a tasting of Lagoa wines and a dinner for guests, the Gala continued, in the concert hall, with a presentation on Lagoa Cidade do Vinho 2016, which included (more) a tribute to General Rocha Vieira, the distinguished Lagoon who was the last Governor of Macau under Portuguese administration, and then the most awaited moment of the night, after 22:30, the concert by the group "Ala dos Namorados", with the unmistakable voice of the Algarvean Nuno Guerreiro.

It was a memorable way, with a full house applauding Portuguese music, to end the gala, which officially kicks off the 2016 Lagoa Cidade do Vinho program.
