The Vilarreal city council recalls that Almeida Santos, now deceased at the age of 89, victim of sudden illness, was "a frequent visitor" to that tourist location, having contributed a lot "to the development and tourist consolidation of the beach in Monte Gordo (VRSA parish), with which it had ties of affinity'.

Through this tribute, the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António intends to «distinguish the legacy and civic and democratic participation of Almeida Santos».

For its part, in a note of regret signed by Carlos Alberto Martins, vice-president of the Municipality of Olhão, this autarchy laments the death of Almeida Santos who, «more than a history of the Socialist Party (PS), was a symbol of the fight for democracy and for the ideals of freedom and justice».

“A person of simple and sincere treatment, he was adored by socialists and respected among all other political groups. He leaves an immense legacy to Portugal, having always given his best in favor of a fairer and more balanced country», stresses the note of regret from the Chamber of Olhão.

With a long and remarkable political career, Almeida Santos was called to perform some of the highest functions in the State, having been decorated, on multiple occasions, for his merit and excellence.

Minister in several Governments, deputy since the 1992st legislature, member of the Council of State, president of the Assembly of the Republic in two legislatures and parliamentary leader of the PS, the party he presided over from XNUMX, he was currently its honorary president.
