Jose Manuel Castelhano Ribeiro PontePhysician and professor José Manuel Castelhano Ribeiro Ponte, founder and first director of the Medicine course at the University of Algarve, is the next guest at the conference of the “Horizontes do Futuro” cycle, which takes place this Thursday, January 28, at 21 pm , in the Main Hall of the Town Hall of Loulé.

The lecturer will speak about the innovative Algarve in Medical Education and the Integrated Masters in Medicine at the University of Algarve (MIM-UAlg).

After a rigorous international assessment, the MIM-UAlg was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on July 24, 2008. The first edition of 32 students entered in September 2009 and graduated in July 2013. The second and third editions graduated up in July 2014 and 2015. Currently, 48 new students join, with a view to expanding to a maximum of 64-72 in a few years.

Born in Lisbon on June 19, 1943, José Ponte studied at the Military College (1955-60) and graduated in Medicine from the University of Lisbon (1961-67).

He holds a degree from Imperial College, London (1968-70), and a Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Bristol (1970-73). Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, London (1979), was elected academic by the European Academy of Anaesthesiology, now ESA (1993). It's also a teacher emeritus of the University of Algarve (2014).

He began his clinical career with a 7th-year internship (eq. IAC) in 1966-67, at Hospital de Santa Maria. He was a medical militia ensign of the Portuguese Army in Angola (1973-75). He did an internship in the specialty of anesthesiology at hospitals in Bristol UK (1975-79), St Radboud Hospital, Nijmegen, Netherlands (1979-80) and Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden (1980-81).

É Higher Specialist Training at King's College Hospital, London (1981-82) and visiting teacher at the Department of Anesthesiology at The Medical Center of the University of California, San Francisco, United States of America (Sabbatical 1987-88).

In academic terms, it was Senior Lecturer and Director of the Academic Department of Anesthesiology at King's College London, Consultant at King's College Hospital (1982-2005) and Visiting Full Professor at the University of Algarve (2006-13).

Conducted research in Respiratory Physiology, ventilation control in animal models (1970-2002), clinical research in Pulmonology (1983-2002), Cardiac Surgery (1996-2002) and Anesthesiology (1983-2002).

Published 44 articles in international journals with “peer review”, several editorials, invited reviews, chapters in books and books. He participated in a BBC2 television program in 1996.
