Ana Cabecinha Wins Fem (Custom)Olympic athlete Ana Cabecinha, from Clube Oriental de Pechão, and Jorge Varela, from Clube Desportivo Areias de S. João, were the winners in the main events of the Regional Cross Country Championship (Long), which took place on Sunday, in Pinheiros of Marim, in Olhão.

The competition, which took place simultaneously with the Corta-mato Jovem de Pechão, gathered around 450 athletes in all age groups (from Benjamins to Veterans), individually or in representation of Algarve clubs.

Four international athletes participated in the Absolute Feminina competition, including Olympic athletes Ana Cabecinha and Ana Dias, who isolated themselves right after the kickoff.

The two athletes maintained a moderate pace until about two kilometers of the race, but from then on Ana Cabecinha isolated herself, becoming Regional Champion of Corta-mato (Long) by completing the approximately five kilometers of the course in 17 minutes and 17 seconds .

In 2nd position came Ana Dias (Areias S. João) with 17.33, while in the following positions (general classification) came international Edna Barros, from the COP (19.23), who was the 1st Under-23. The 4th was Liliana Veríssimo (Individual) with 19.30, Helena Miranda (Belavista) was 5th with 20.03.

The Clube Oriental de Pechão won the Regional collective title in women.

The men's competition had an excellent lot of participants, having even participated, extra competition, the Finnish athlete Jimmy Finnholm (was 2nd with 21.58).

In general, he won the Regional Championship Jorge Varela, from Areias S. João, which spent 21.52 kilometers to complete the approximately seven kilometers of the route between pine trees and sand.

2nd in the Regional was Cláudio Pica (Sambrasense) with 22.13, in 3rd position came Paulo Soares (Areias S. João) with 22.21. Rafael Menau (Onda Sólida) was in 4th place with 22.24, in 5th position was Fábio Mascarenhas (Areias S. João) with 22.33 (1st Sub-23). The CD Areias S. João won the collective Regional title.

At the same time, the Pechão Youth Cross-country took place in the Benjamins, Infants, Initiates and Youth levels. Around 250 young athletes participated in these competitions, collectively won the Clube Oriental de Pechão.

The competition was organized by the Clube Oriental de Pechão, in partnership with the Municipality of Olhão and the Athletics Association of the Algarve, and also had the support of the Parish Councils of the Municipality of Olhão (Pechão, Quelfes and Olhão), Municipal Firefighters de Olhão, Arbitration Council of the Algarve Athletics Association, Union of Bank Workers of the South and Islands, Lusitânia – Insurance and local businesses.
