INEM_5The Hospital Center of Faro opened an inquiry to investigate whether the procedures for transferring a patient victim of a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) when he was in the emergency room of the Hospital de Faro, were all fulfilled. After this decision, the 74-year-old man died in Coimbra Hospital, where he was hospitalized, in a deep coma.

Second revealed to Sul Informação Pedro Nunes, chairman of the Board of Directors of the CHA, at the outset, everything points to the health professionals involved having acted in the best way, but even so, it was decided to launch an inquiry. This inquiry will be directed "by Dr. Alfredo Santos, one of the Hospital's most experienced clinicians."

The 74-year-old man who died early this Monday, after having been in a deep coma at Coimbra Hospital for a few days, was originally treated in Faro and sent to Lisbon after being the victim of a stroke. When he arrived at the Hospital de São José, he was refused entry, as, according to the national press, the doctor on duty was on his way out. From there, he took an ambulance to Coimbra, where he fell into a coma and ended up dying.

At issue is not the transfer of the patient, since this «would always be the only option, since the hospitals in the Algarve are not able to assist in this type of situation», but whether the transfer procedures were all followed. «The information I have is that everything went smoothly», guaranteed Pedro Nunes.

According to the administrator of the Algarve hospitals, as soon as the transfer of a patient is decided, “the ball” goes to CODU/INEM. Even so, he said, "it is normal that the hospital of origin starts immediately to establish contacts with the hospital where the patient is going." Thus, the inquiry will seek to determine “what was done and who spoke to whom”.

On the part of the CHA, added Pedro Nunes, there was a concern to accompany the patient in question «with a doctor and a specialist nurse» and it was even the Hospital that provided the necessary machines to maintain the patient's stability, with which « the ambulance was not equipped”.
