This is the way to celebrate the Municipal Holiday of Portimo, in a program of activities that runs from the 4th to the 12th of December.

The holiday is December 11th, the day on which Portimão marks the 91st anniversary of its status as a city.

According to the City Council, the program of activities intends to «celebrate Portimão in its cultural diversity and capacity to welcome not only newcomers, but also new generations of athletes, musicians, writers and artists who enhance the city with their talents. effects".

Thus, immigrants from Angola, Brazil, Iran, Russia and China, currently residing in Portimão, were invited to actively participate in the Solemn Session of the Day of the City, scheduled for 11:00 am on December 11, sharing, on this occasion, their experiences of life and the way in which they were integrated into the Portimonense society.

"Migrations and Development - a local perspective" will be the subject of a debate scheduled for December 5, at 15:30 pm, in the auditorium of the Portimão Museum, which will feature the participation of local personalities with different perspectives on the theme of migration, namely Mostafa Zefri (ISMAT professor), Father Frederico Lemos (Jesuit), Sub-commissioner Luís Sérgio Miranda (Commander of the PSP Criminal Investigation Squad), Arnaldo Moreira (coordinating inspector of the SEF – Foreigners and Borders Service), Ludmila Moghilevscaia ( CHAPEL Support Center for Emigrant Population of the East and Friends), Jorge Mutombene (All Mozambi – Cultural and Recreational Association of Mozambicans and Friends of Mozambique), and even Hélder Gonçalves (coordinating professor of the “Português para Todos” project at Manuel Teixeira Secondary School Gomes).

Pedro Cantinho Pereira (professor at ISMAT) will be moderating this debate, and cultural events will also take place with the participation of Jaír Baptista (Brazilian music) and the Capoeira Association of the District of Faro- Revolution Group.

Also under the theme of migrations, on December 6, at 18 pm, an invitation to watch the film “Mediterranea” is launched, which addresses the current and controversial issue of the crossing of the Mediterranean by immigrants in search of security and freedom .

The session has free entry, and takes place at the Cinemas of Portimão – Algarcine.

This is the first film by young director Jonas Carpignano, one of the three finalists in the Lux Prize awarded this year by the European Parliament to promote cinema.

On the 8th, the Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo de Portimão opens its doors, in an atmosphere of celebration and sporting spirit, to honor the champions from Portimão who stood out over the last season in numerous sports, in the traditional Sports Gala, with the beginning scheduled for the 17:00 pm

This municipal equipment, built in 1983, underwent a profound requalification process, which began in 2010 and which, after four years of halted work, was resumed and finished in 2015.

Scheduled to open in early 2016, after installing the equipment necessary for sports, whose acquisition process is underway, this "new" pavilion will once again bring strong sports dynamics to the city center, in a larger building , modern and environmentally friendly.

 

Portimão

City Day- December 11th

The City Day, officially, begins at 9:00 am, in front of the Town Hall, with the traditional “Hastear da Bandeira”, which includes the participation of the Sociedade Filarmónica Portimonense, Fanfarra of the Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Portimão and the Columbófila Society of Portimão, from PSP, GNR and PM-Capitania and Fuzileiros do Algarve Association.

And because the Avenida S. João de Deus Market celebrates its 8th anniversary, at 10:00 am there will be a birthday cake, made and served by students from the Hotel and Tourism School of Portimão, accompanied by a tasting of gin and liqueurs by the company Paixão Bartender.

On this occasion, a photography exhibition with exclusive images of the city of Portimão, by Grandangular, will also be inaugurated.

This will be followed by the Solemn Session at 11:00 am, in Paços do Concelho, where the official interventions of the President of the Municipal Assembly and the Mayor will take place, as well as interventions by five immigrants residing in Portimão, with the musical moments being in charge of the students of the 10thA Strings and Keys Instrumentalist Professional Course – NOPA (Orchestra section and accompaniment practices), accompanied by professor Gonçalo Duarte.

The 1st Independent Cinema Exhibition of Portimão – Made In Portimão takes place at 18 pm, at the Cinemas of Portimão-Algarcine, where four short films will be screened: Virtual, Contrastres, Process 00 and Up to the End, with free entry.

“Made In Portimão” is an organization of the Gazól Filmes, which was born in 2013, by the hand of three friends who met during the etic_algarve Achievement course, where they graduated. They then launched into the audiovisual field, having performed live shows, event coverage, promotional videos, video clips, documentaries and short films to date.

People from Portimo are invited to participate in different activities scheduled between the 4th and 12th of December, from photography exhibitions, film screenings, musical performances, dance, fado, book launches, practice of various sports, among many others, enjoying of your city and of some of the infrastructures that are available to everyone.

The official program will start on December 4, at 18 pm, at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library with the inauguration of the photography exhibition “Portimão, Imagens de Outros Tempos”, which invites a journey through the young city of Portimão, through films, photographs and books with images from other times that the older ones will remember and the younger ones will discover.

Manuel Teixeira Gomes will be remembered once again by his city, through the book by the publisher Arandis - "Manuel Teixeira Gomes in a sublime crusade in search of beauty", by José Artur Pacheco, to be presented on December 6th, at 16 pm , at the Museu de Portimão, with the participation of Aires de Almeida and the Coral Adágio.

On December 7th, at 18:30 pm, at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, the exhibition “Portimão, you are here”, by Bruno Fonseca and Ramiro Spinedi, will be inaugurated, showing, through aerial photographs, a more comprehensive spatial perception of the various parts of the city of Portimão, in a virtual journey along the west bank of the River Arade, with the Serra de Monchique as the northern limit, and the typical Vila de Alvor and its Ria as the western limit.

Also within the scope of the City Day Celebrations, on December 9, at 21 pm, the Support Service to the Portimão Associative Movement – ​​AMA Portimão will be publicly presented at the Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes.

This is a service that the municipality will make available to the associative fabric of Portimo, with a view to promoting associations and encouraging commitment and voluntary work, facilitating dialogue and exchange between the Municipality and Associations, as well as to deepen the knowledge of the associative reality of the Municipality.

On this occasion, the Prize for the Ideas Contest launched for the logo of the ARU – Urban Rehabilitation Area will also be awarded, and there will be room for a contemporary dance show “Meia Praia – a look at the Algarve fishing community”, by Dancenema- Associação Cultural.

The night of December 10th will be marked by the performance of local artists who will take to the stage of TEMPO - Teatro Municipal de Portimão, at 21:30 pm, for the 3rd edition of the show Ká-se-faz, which will feature the participation of the Banda Filarmónica Portimonense , Reflect and Laura Abel (music and dance), Luana Velásques (Fado), Children's Choir of Grupo Coral Adágio, Gymnastics Group of the Mexilhoeira Instruction and Recreation Center (gymnastics/dance), Accordion Orchestra of the Academia Música de Lagos and the Rancho Folclorico da Figueira, with the presentation by Adriano Pereira.

On the occasion of the City Day, the sports complexes of Mexilhoeira Grande and Alvor will open their doors for free use, in the first case, on December 10, from 8:00 am to 20:00 pm, for various fitness classes, swimming for children and young people and water aerobics, while on the morning of December 12th, the Alvor swimming pool will be free to use, between 9:00 am and 13:00 pm.

December 12th, at 16 pm, will also be the occasion for the inauguration of two exhibitions at the Portimão Museum – the works awarded in the 00th Photographic Race of Portimão and “15- O Awakening of the Algarve”, an exhibition that takes place within the scope of centenary celebrations of the first Algarve regional congress held in 1915 in Praia da Rocha.

The Final of the XI Edition of the Amateur Fado Contest – Cidade de Portimão will take place at 21:20 pm and will feature the participation of the fado singer Jorge Fernando, as a special guest.

Associativism, as usual, marks the experience of the City Day in a special way and will dynamise over the various days many of the sporting, cultural and recreational events programmed and that mark the Festivities, within the scope of the City Day.
