The tunnel on Avenida da República, in Olhão, which was completely flooded and impassable, was the only “victim” of this night's storm in the Algarve.

Source of the District Relief Operations Command (CDOS) of Faro revealed to Sul Informação that, apart from the departures of firefighters motivated by "normal small floods" in these situations of heavy rain, there was nothing to register in the region.

In Olhão, as is customary whenever it rains a little harder and more concentrated, the tunnel that connects Avenida da República and Avenida Bernardino da Silva was completely covered with water, as can be seen in the photo, taken this morning at 8:30 am. Sunday.

This tunnel, which runs under the railway line, in addition to serving car traffic, is also used as an underpass for pedestrians.

When the pedestrian upper level crossing was closed just over a year ago, by REFER, alleging security reasons forcing all people on foot to use the underpass, the frequent flooding of the tunnel was one of the arguments most used by those who spoke out against it.

A week ago, the company Infraestruturas de Portugal re-installed a level crossing, equipped with guards, but which will be subject to a nightly closing time, between 22 pm and 00:6 am. During the night, anyone who wants to walk among the main avenues of Olhão will have to do it through the tunnel…a task that would be impossible this morning, unless you wanted to dedicate yourself to diving.
