The intervention will cost 13 million euros, which will be shared between Portugal and Spain, and it is estimated that it will take a year and a half to be completed, from the moment it is awarded.

The imminence of the advance of this work had already been advanced to the Sul Informação, about a month ago, by the president of IP António Ramalho. On the day the main section of the Variant Faro opened to the public, the person responsible for this publicly owned company revealed that there was already an agreement with Spain to launch the procedure.

“This is a work that is sometimes forgotten, but it is a very important point, as it is the entry into the country. It is quite degraded, although it does not pose security issues. In June, we signed the protocol with Spain, not only regarding the scheduling, but also the quantification of costs. This time, each will pay, from the first hour, their share of the costs», revealed, at the time, António Ramalho. In other words, Portugal pays half the value of the work.

This Wednesday, IP announced the launch of the public tender and provided some details of the work. From the outset, the intervention will not, at any time, impede the circulation of traffic on the bridge, despite the limitations inherent to a work of this nature being foreseen.

Of the planned interventions, we highlight the «rehabilitation of the tie rod system and the implementation of safety measures for its protection, the rehabilitation of reinforced concrete elements, the rehabilitation and/or replacement of support equipment, joints and safety elements, rehabilitation of lighting and signaling in the river area, remodeling of signaling and implementation of a variable signaling system, decorative lighting of the bridge and bridge monitoring».

«The access bridge and viaduct came into service in August 1991 and have been subject to regular conservation work, however 20 years after having been built, a deeper intervention is now needed in the structural rehabilitation of the International Bridge over the river. Guadiana. The implementation project has already been approved by Portugal and Spain within the scope of the Luso-Spanish Mixed Technical Committee, of which IP is an integral part», framed the company.
