The solemn procession through the streets of the city, with the image of Nossa Senhora da Luz, attributed to Machado de Castro, is the highlight of the festivities in honor of the patron saint, scheduled for September 8, a municipal holiday.
The procession leaves at 19 pm from the Igreja Matriz – which was practically destroyed by the earthquake of November 00, 1 – a relic of religious architecture, which has a baroque façade, with three naves, and houses the image of Nossa Senhora da Luz.
Nossa Senhora da Luz made her first exit, in a popular procession, in 1837, by decision of the Parish Council, on August 9 of the same year. Today, the event is so well known and venerated in the region that it draws crowds with it, given the weight of the strong religious traditions it represents, making it a visiting card of the county, in terms of Catholic culture.
The party then continues in front of the Igreja Matriz, in Largo dos Combatentes – where the Library, the Municipal Archive and the monument to Combatentes are located – which becomes a lively meeting point, with the logistical and functional support of the City Council. de Lagoa, responsible for the arrival of the artists and who also provides the space to small market stalls.
In order for the festival to be, in fact, of popular origin, the Parish organizes a fete with donations from the population.
This year, the Festivities in Honor of Senhora da Luz begin on September 4th, with the presentation of the comedy play “Os retrasados no Zoomarine”, by the Grupo Coral Jovem da Paróquia de Lagoa, at the Municipal Auditorium (21:00).
On Sunday, the 6th, the commemorative Eucharist is celebrated for the Consecration of the Igreja Matriz (12:00), with the final of the contest “Voz de Lagoa 2015” (21:00).
On Monday, the 7th, there will be a Eucharist (9:00 am), opening of the Quermesse (20:00) and a show with Ricardo & Henrique.
The big day of the festivities is the 8th of September, with several initiatives planned. Thus, at 16 pm, the photography exhibition “O Algarve de Artur Pastor” opens at the Convento de S. José, the highlight of the Lagoa Photography Meetings.
After mass at 18:00 pm, there is a procession through the city streets (19:00 pm), the opening of the Quermesse (20:00), the show with Adriana Lua and her band (22:00), followed by the traditional fireworks (23:45).
