The archaeological site of Monte Molião, in Lagos, will open its doors on the 26th of August, Thursday, between 9:00 and 12:00. The day ends with another performative action from the cycle “Cooking in the Landscape”, this time with the pretext of Monte Molião.

This is the fifth edition of the Open Doors Journeys, which are intended to make known the excavations carried out in this site, which will be the remote origin of the city of Lagos.

Monte Molião is a small oval hill, located on the right bank of the mouth of the Bensafrim stream.

The investigation that, since 2006, the UNIARQ (Archaeological Center of the University of Lisbon) has been carrying out on the site, with the financial support of the Municipality of Lagos, and whose work is coordinated by the archaeologist Ana Margarida Arruda, allowed collect important data about their ancient occupations (from the Iron Age and Roman times).

The domestic architectures and the very abundant archaeological materials recovered during the fieldwork demonstrate the integration of Monte Molião into the great trade routes of antiquity and the interaction of its inhabitants with other Mediterranean human communities.

In the afternoon, a conference and video projection about this place is planned, taking place in the Auditorium of Paços do Concelho XXI Century.

The day ends with a guided tour of the excavation, followed by a performative action «Cooking in the Landscape», integrated in the Palato project, which addresses themes that place the Gastronomy of each period in intersection with the eating habits of contemporary society.

Jorge Rocha, the artist responsible for the project, revealed to Sul Informação that the menu of this «Cooking in the Landscape», which will only be revealed at the time, is inspired by the «Roman period» to which the ruins of Monte Molião date back, making a «bridge» with the city of Lagos.

The Open Doors Journeys of Monte Molião are organized by the Municipality of Lagos and have the collaboration of UNIARQ – Center for Archeology of the University of Lisbon.
