Castro Marim assumed, on Saturday, in a ceremony at Colina do Revelim de Santo António, the presidency of the Eurocity of Guadiana.

The ceremony was attended by the mayor of Castro Marim, Francisco Amaral, the president of the Ayuntamiento de Ayamonte, Alberto Fernandez Rodriguez, the councilor of Vila Real de Santo António, João Rodrigues, the vice-president of the Commission of Regional Coordination and Development of the Algarve, Nuno Marques, and Fátima Ruíz-Granados, from the Junta de Andalucia.

"Today begins a new stage of this Eurocity", declared Francisco Amaral, now also president of the Eurocity of Guadiana, adding that he intends to hold a "broad debate, listen to civil society", in a reflection on the direction of the Eurocity and its use maximum for the development of the three municipalities.

“I am absolutely convinced that the future of the Eurocity in the hands of President Francisco Amaral will only bring us good things and better quality of life,” said outgoing President Alberto Rodriguez, of the Ayuntamiento de Ayamonte.

The border municipalities of Vila Real de Santo António, Castro Marim and Ayamonte constitute the first Eurocity in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.

The collaboration protocol that gave rise to the creation of the Eurocity of Guadiana – initially composed of the municipalities of VRSA and Ayamonte – was formalized on January 9, 2013.

Following the existing territorial and cultural proximity, the municipality of Castro Marim joined the Eurocity, on May 9, 2013, in a ceremony held at Revelim de Santo António, in Castro Marim.
