Isilda GomesThe Portimão City Council announced that it will propose the extinction of the controversial Municipal Civil Protection Tax, a tax that began to be charged in 2014, although it has been scheduled since 2012.

Isilda Gomes, president of the autarchy, revealed, at the Chamber meeting this Wednesday, that she will propose to the Executive Committee of the Municipal Support Fund (FAM) the revocation of the Municipal Civil Protection Tax.

In statements to the Sul Informação, the mayor recalled that "I always said that if I could, I wouldn't charge that fee, but I had to charge it because it was included in the Financial Adjustment Plan, linked to the PAEL."

But in the meantime conditions have changed. Therefore, "at this moment, given the financial adjustments that we have been making and the fact that we are managing to pay off debts, we can propose a relief of that rate to our citizens," added Isilda Gomes.

This measure will save "to families and companies from Portimo a year on the order of 900 euros."

«The Executive will propose the revocation of the Financial Adjustment Plan approved by the Municipal Assembly in the last term and which imposed, among other measures, the collection of the Municipal Civil Protection Fee», specifies the Portimão Chamber.

This announcement is made following the preliminary draft of the Municipal Adjustment Plan (PAM) delivered to the Executive Board of the Municipal Support Fund (FAM), whose final version will be discussed at an extraordinary Chamber meeting scheduled for July 22, next Wednesday. fair.

«The WFP was the target of a long negotiation process both with the Fund's Management, and with the various political forces with seats in the Municipal Assembly, who were asked to contribute with a view to improving the initial document», assured the autarchy.

“I had a financial study carried out with the fee and without the fee and it was concluded that the impact on the WFP is not significant”, explained Isilda Gomes.

The mayor also added, in her statements to the Sul Informação, that the Chamber has already delivered its “definitive version”, which will now be analyzed by the Executive Committee of the FAM, “we hope that in the shortest possible time”. However, the process can be delayed as that body struggles with a shortage of staff to review the processes.

Once the fee is extinguished, the idea is that Civil Protection will be financed by the municipal budget, «thus guaranteeing the financing of the Humanitarian Association of the Voluntary Firefighters of Portimão and other aspects of Municipal Civil Protection».
