Saturday and SundayThe Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) warns of the «gradual rise in temperature, especially of the maximum», reaching the highest values on the 28th and 29th, Sunday and Monday, respectively.

According to IPMA, "in Alentejo and inland Centro the maximum temperature should reach values above 40ºC and the minimum temperature should register values above 20ºC", namely at night.

The site Meteophons points out, on the other hand, that in the Algarve there may also be places reaching close to 40ºC, mainly in the more inland areas (Alcoutim, for example).

The coast will be slightly cooler, with maximums around 32ºC/34ºC, depending a lot on the wind direction. “If the breeze blows from the S/SE on the south coast, these places will be slightly cooler. Where the north wind persists, temperatures will tend to rise rapidly,” adds Meteofontes.

In the Algarve, Sunday will be, in principle, slightly “cooler”, but with the highs still close to 35ºC in most places and rising to 40ºC in some parts of the Alentejo.

In general, the maximum temperature on these days, according to IPMA data, will be above 34ºC throughout the territory, except on the North coast, where it should vary between 26 and 30ºC.

The «persistence of high values of the maximum temperature» led the IPMA to place under an orange warning, the second most serious of a scale of four, the district of Beja, also placing under yellow warning the districts of Faro, Évora, Setúbal, Lisbon, Portalegre, Guarda and Castelo Branco.

On the 30th, Tuesday, a small drop in the maximum temperature is expected, which may be accentuated on Wednesday.

The IPMA explains that this rise in temperature is due to "an anticyclone that spreads
on a ridge to the Bay of Biscay, and which carries in its circulation a mass of hot, dry air'.

In the Madeira archipelago, due to a northeast current associated with the anticyclone, the maximum temperature should register, from Sunday, the 28th, values between 27 and
29ºC, except in mountainous areas, where it should not exceed 20ºC.
